Made by and When: Starkey’s Daughter Cloth Dolls, January 2017

Material: Wool-blend felt (faces, legs, and arms); cotton blend (torso and head)

Marks: Signed and dated by the artist

Height: Denise is 16 inches; Carole, Addie, and Cynthia are 20 inches.

Hair/Eyes/Mouth: Handmade Kanekalon wigs/painted facial features

Clothes: The dolls are dressed in period-appropriate clothes of the early 1960s, made by the artist, Rachel McCullough Sherrod of Starkey’s Daughter Cloth Dolls. The shoes were purchased.

Other: Part of the artist’s Heritage series, this set of four dolls was made in tribute to the four little girls who tragically lost their lives during the September 15, 1963, American terrorist bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama by a member of the Ku Klux Klan. Their names were Denise McNair, whose full name was Carol Denise McNair (age 11); Carole Robertson (age 14), Addie Mae Collins (age 14), and Cynthia Wesley (age 14).  The dolls are all one-of-a-kind. These dolls are part of the artist’s Heritage Collection.
