Porcelain Pete

Name: Porcelain Pete

Made by and When: Lauretta, 1980

Material: Porcelain, paint, felt

Marks: (Head) MANDY (Back) Lauretta 1980

Height: 10 inches

Hair, Eyes, Mouth: Separate black porcelain curls, squinted black painted eyes; open smile with two upper teeth and a felt tongue

Clothes: Dressed in a handmade gray camouflage hoodie and shorts by Laylee M. Doll Clothes and gray felt slip-on shoes made by the curator

Other: Made in 1980, Pete is a smaller porcelain reproduction of Horsman’s 1957 12-1/2-inch Pete. (In the gallery below, see a comparison photo of the porcelain doll and the original vinyl doll.) Similar to the original doll, this porcelain version has ethnically correct facial features. It is presumed that a porcelain mold company made and sold reproduction Pete molds named “Mandy” for use by independent doll artists in dollmaking, or that an independent doll artist created a mold from the Horsman doll.
