Pedigree Saucy Walker

Name: Saucy Walker

Made by and When: Pedigree, circa 1955

Material: Hard plastic

Marks: Pedigree (on the back of the neck), Pedigree / MADE IN / ENGLAND (on the upper back above the ma-ma voice box, which is marked 20T).

Height: 20 inches

Hair, Eyes, Mouth: Replaced brown acrylic wig, brown open-close, flirty eyes; open mouth with two upper teeth and a sculpted red tongue

Clothes: Redressed in a red and white gingham dress and matching panties, original white shoes with replaced ribbon ties

Other: Usually described as “Dusky” Saucy Walker because of the lighter brown complexion than what was typically used on most Black Pedigree dolls, this doll was a gift to the curator. It had been the former Australian owner’s one and only doll as a child having received it as a Christmas/birthday present in December 1956. The former owner’s mother had the original wig replaced during the 1970s, and she made the dress and matching panties the doll now wears. The doll was named “Betty” after the former owner, Sally McLean’s, mother. Betty has a pot belly and chubby legs, which is different from the slimmer bodies used for other Pedigree- and American-made Saucy Walkers.
